about me

My name is Sabine Harrer, and I am a PhD, lecturer and game maker based in Vienna, Berlin and Copenhagen. I currently work on a freelance basis as a games lecturer, game designer, and media artist.

I’m a member of the Copenhagen Game Collective, an experimental collective creating and curating alternative games in the Nordic region, and I volunteer for the Game Girl Workshop, a non-profit initiative encouraging girls to express themselves through games.

In the past, I have worked as a lecturer in cultural studies and media/visual literacy at the university of Vienna, the IT University Copenhagen, and BTK Berlin.

In my artistic and teaching praxis, as well as in my writing, I explore videogames as thing to re/think culture. For my PhD I designed a game that helped me review 20th century grief literature, and co-designed a narrative game exploring pregnancy loss. One of my games expounds the mechanics of religion, and several of my games investigate intimacy and flirtation.

I have presented on these topics internationally, at events like GDC San Francisco, Gotland Game Conference Visby, A.Maze Berlin, DiGRA Game Studies Conference Lüneburg, F.R.O.G Vienna, and less Adorno – more play, Kassel among others.
